Minicon 2 is complete!

The second minicon finished last night. Thank you to all the GMs who stepped up and provided games, and players who took time out of a busy Father’s Day weekend to join us.

From an organizer’s stand point, everyone seemed to step up and run without needing much direction. The games ran without many immediate complaints–hopefully everyone had a good time.

We didn’t shoot many pictures–the camera battery died after only a few snaps. If you have pictures you’re willing to share, please send us links to your shots online or email us pictures. Thanks!

Feedback and Planning

If you have comments about the mini-con just past, or ideas for improving future minicons, please send comments to events@crazysquirrelgamestore.com.

Below are my observations–I’d love to hear yours, whether they agree, contradict, or address entirely different things.
– Father’s Day weekend prevented many people from being able to participate, particularly on Sunday. That’s obviously less than ideal.
– The split-slots seemed to make scheduling trickier, increasing the number of game conflicts, without adding a lot of value. Below, please find a proposed schedule for next time. Knock it around–how would you improve it?
– The Sunday PFS slots didn’t align with the non-Pathfinder slots. It would have been nice to allow people to hop from one to the other, but I didn’t prepare far enough out to coordinate correctly.
– Registration was split between mini-con signups (via the form on this site) and Warhorn (for the Sunday PFS games.). It seemed to work out okay, but I’d understand if that proved confusing. After all, the Saturday PFS games were included in the minicon selector.
– I didn’t post a link to the players-in-games list during signups, mostly to prevent a “winner’s curse”. (In a winner’s curse, the games that start to fill up are rushed because “they’re obviously the best”, or because you can always switch to less in demand games later.) Do you want to see lists of players and games during signups? If so, at what point in the process do you want to see the list?
– Related: GMs, at what point in the process do you want to know what players are are signed up for your slot? Do you want a player list on game day? Do you want the email addresses of players to develop backgrounds, etc., before the con?
– I filled games in the order submitted, allowing people to pick all of their slots at once. Would it be “more fair” to require priorities (so everyone gets their first choice, in order, before we fill second choices)? That would be more complicated, and might introduce more errors, but if there’s a strong demand, we could try it.

Five Slot Minicon Schedule

Saturday Sunday
11-3 pm 11-3:30 pm
3:30-5:30 pm 3:30-7:30 pm
6-10 pm

Note that I sandwiched the 2 hour slot between the 4 hour slots on Saturday, so that 6 hour games can be created by merging slots to form 11am-:5:30pm or 3:30-10 pm sessions.

Thanks for helping create a great con! I’m already looking forward to the next one.

June 2012: Roleplaying Minicon Full Event Listing

Saturday Events

10 am: Store opens. Free RPG day handouts! Events begin at 10:30 am.

Dawn of the Scarlet Sun (Pathfinder)
Sat, June 16, 10:30am – 3:00pm
GM: Will Johnson, 6 players. An adventure for 5th-level characters. The coastal city of Magnimar is no stranger to crime, yet recently, a series of murders has sent a chill through the early morning streets. Someone—or something—is stalking and killing worshipers of Sarenrae, the goddess of the sun. The city guard is prepared to ambush the murderer, but they need help—help of the kind that adventurers are so good at providing. What is the sinister truth behind these violent acts?

The Night Clerk (Call of Cthulhu)
Sat, June 16, 10:30am – 3:00pm
GM: Allyson Fanning, 4 players. A freak blizzard traps the players in a hotel for night. When the power goes out it’s a race against time to survive the night.

Pirates! (Savage Worlds)
Sat, June 16, 10:30am – 12:30pm
GM: Joel Soto, 5 players. A band of heroic pirates are desperate for gold and adventure. The group is tricked with a nasty curse and must find a way to break it. All the while being hunted by the English.

What gives? (Castle Falkenstein)
Sat, June 16, 10:30am – 12:30pm
GM: JP Menard, 6 players. New Europa is on the brink of war. Can you find the clockwork person that is the key to stop the tension? He or she is in the middle of Victorian London. The world is Lord of the Rings with Jules Verne science fiction.

Dawn of Defiance: The Agent’s Gambit (Star Wars Saga Edition)
Sat, June 16, 1:00pm – 5:30pm
GM: Bryan Berrett, Players 3-5. It is a dark time in the galaxy. The evil Galactic Empire has spread from the Deep Core to the Outer Rim, and everywhere the Empire’s tyranny can be felt. Fleeing from the oppression of Emperor Palpatine’s minions, an agent of Senator Bail Organa has run to a transit space station above Brentaal. Known to be a vocal opponent of the Emperor’s policies, Organa may be the last hope of freedom in the galaxy. In order to stop this agent from reaching their destination, the Empire has sent out an alert to all Imperial Forces in the sector, including those on Sel Zonn Station, where the struggle for liberty rages on and the first sparks of rebellion have begun to burn….

Dawn of the Scarlet Sun (Pathfinder)
Sat, June 16, 1:00pm – 5:30pm
GM: Jack Krause, 4-6 players. The adventure module being given away during Free RPG Day.

Return Policy (D&D 4e)
Sat, June 16, 1:00pm – 5:30pm
GM: Andy Aleman, 5 players. Three weeks ago, your adventuring party discovered a mysterious artifact while exploring some ruins. Naturally, you threw it in your pile of loot and brought it home. Yeah, that was a big mistake. Return Policy is a brutal “fourtcore” style dungeon crawl. Characters will be provided. You may bring your own level 11 character ONLY IF you have a suitable matching mini.

The Whispering Wood (Storyteller)
Sat, June 16, 1:00pm – 5:30pm
GM: Johnathen Tonozzi, 3-5 players. Getting lost is a part of life. Sometimes we turn down a road we don’t recognize and can’t find our way back. Boats get lost in the ocean. Kids let go of their mother’s hand and go astray in a crowded mall. Of course, most people get themselves back on track through luck or skill, or ended up being found by someone else. But what if you got lost and never got found?…

D&D For Kids (4e D&D)
Sat, June 16, 1pm – 3pm
DescriptionCraig Brown runs a quick adventure for kids up to age 14. A great chance to introduce the next generation to tabletop roleplaying.

Legacy of Disaster (L5R 4e)
Sat, June 16, 3:30pm – 10:00pm
GM: Bill Kerney, 6 players. Legacy of Disaster is an introduction to the L5R roleplaying game, set in the world of Rokugan, which is basically medieval Japan with some Chinese influences. The players are all samurai attending a court held by a minor daimyo when disaster strikes… All PCs are pregenerated, and the rules system will be explained.

Undying Legacy of the First Ones [NeoExodus/Pathfinder]
Sat, June 16, 3:30pm – 10:00pm
GM: Will Johnson, players 4. At the request of the Sanguine Covenant, the PC’s travel to a small border village in the Caneus Empire besieged by a tribe of calibans. Aggressive, barbaric, cannibalistic, and dangerous, the calibans are a threat to civilized people everywhere. More is afoot than initially believed.

Dawn of the Scarlet Sun (Pathfinder)
Sat, June 16, 6pm – 10pm
GM: Josh McIllwain, 6 players.

Return Policy [D&D 4e]
Sat, June 16, 6pm – 10pm
GM: Andy Aleman, 5 players. Three weeks ago your adventuring party found a strange artifact while exploring some ruins. Naturally, you threw it on top of the loot pile and brought it home. Yeah, that was a big mistake. Return Policy is a brutal, fourthcore style dungeon crawl. Characters will be provided. You may bring your own 11th level character ONLY if you have a suitable matching mini. This is a repeat of the afternoon game.

Shadowrun Intro
Sat, June 16, 6pm – 10pm
GM: Kevin Wing, Players: 5. This will be a demo of Shadowrun, running the adventure included in Catalyst’s Free RPG Day offering. New players are highly encouraged!

The Hunt (Savage Worlds, Slipstream)
Sat, June 16, 6pm – 10pm
GM: Scott Richman, Players: 2-6. Amid the fragments of worlds rules the science and flavor of 1930s Saturday morning pulp serials, for Slipstream is a realm of square-jawed heroes, ray guns, weird science, and rocketships. It is a realm where the morals are black and white, where good triumphs over evil, and where danger lurks at every turn. The Abarash’s elders have a dark and ancient secret. Once a year those who want to lead the Abarash go to a small unnamed fragment near Simba and perform a Koal, a Hunt of Intelligent Beings. The Koal is a tradition from ancestral times that decides the Abarash’s next Chief. It was long ago banned by other tribes of Lion Men, but not the fierce Abarash.

First Steps, Part 1: In Service of Lore (Pathfinder Society Intro)
GM: Geoff Worstell, 6 players. An adventure for 1st-level characters. In your first mission as a Pathfinder agent, the head of the Grand Lodge sends you on a number of missions throughout the metropolis of Absalom, pitting you against traps, thieves, and even an unruly devil, all in the pursuit of knowledge.

Neutral Grounds (Dresden Files RPG)
Sun, June 17, 2pm – 6pm
GM: Tony Ridgway, Number of Players: 3-5. Neutral Grounds: Come for the hot, fresh coffee. Stay for the cold-blooded murder. Two dead barristas … a missing proprietor … ghoul attacks … poser vampires … boy trouble. And it’s your case, whether you like it or not. Better make that a double espresso. The Neutral Grounds casefile is a one-shot mystery-adventure for the Dresden Files Role-Playing Game, intended for 3-7 [I will be capping this at 5, as I’m a new GM] characters at the “Up To Your Waist” [low-level] power level. Customizable, pregenerated characters with sheets and power details are provided. In addition, there will a 30 minute quick overview of how the Dresden Files RPG system works. Familiarity with the FATE system or its variants (Spirit of the Century is the big one) is a plus. Disclaimer: this will be my third session running as a GM, so patience and understanding are appreciated (as will be any feedback after the adventure).

The Island [Call of Cthulu]
Sun, June 17, 2pm – 6pm
GM: Sheila Mitchell, players 6: A few weeks ago, you were selected to join a crew of twelve for a Survivor like reality show. Now there are 7 left and things have gotten strange. Do you have what it takes to survive the Island? With your sanity intact?

(Pathfinder signups are via Warhorn. Congratulations to Pathfinder on its very successful year of organized play!)

Minicon Schedule and Event Signup

Welcome to sign-ups for our second Roleplaying Games Minicon, June 16th and 17th. First, here’s a graphic of the many cool games on offer.

Below is the form to complete to sign up for the events. Please provide an email address rather than a phone number, if possible. I tend to write game confirmations quickly when responding by email; phone calls are often saved up for the weekend. If you want to know your status sooner, make it easy for me: include an email address.

A few notes. First: watch your beginning and ending times! Some 10:30 am games end at 12:30 pm, allowing participation in games that start at 1 pm. Other games starting at the same time last until 3 pm. Note: Players with time conflicts will not be signed up for any of conflicting slots until the error is corrected. So don’t shotgun and claim 3 games at the same time–you won’t get into any of them.

For descriptions of games, including GM and number of players, scroll down to June 16th on the “upcoming events” calendar to the right. Click on the event and a full description (including confirmation of the time block) will appear. You can open as many event listings at once as you like. Alternately, click on The Minicon Event Listing for the events in post format.

RPG Minicon 2012: GM signups

After the tremendous success of last year’s minicon, we’re looking to expand–in time, if not space. This year, we’re planning a two day event: the con will run both Saturday June 16th and Sunday June 17th.

For now, our first priority is to get some games arranged. A few of you have already sent us emails–thank you for stepping up. All GMs who are interested in running a game, please fill out the easy to use form below. We’ll take your entries and create a signup sheet–hopefully offering you a table full of excited players!

For maximum flexibility, we’ve broken games into 2 hour slots, except for a long “end of day” slot. We expect most games to run for multiple slots–GMs should just check multiple boxes for longer games. For a typical con or PFS scenario, check two boxes.

If there’s something that’s missing from the form, or if you’d prefer to discuss the event unconstrained by the form layout, please email events@crazysquirrelgamestore.com.

(If you’d like to see last year’s games, here were the games on offer at the 2011 minicon.)
